RTB Rewind: Boot Camp Clik Drops 'For The People'

The Boot Camp Clik dropped their debut full-length album For The People in May of 1997.

The Clik, consisting of Originoo Gun Cappas, Black Moon, Cocoa Brovas (formerly Smif -N- Wessun) and Heltah Skeltah, first appeared together on "Cession At Da Doghillee" from Smif-N-Wessun's 1994 debut album, Dah Shinin'.

For The People featured mostly live instrumentation, assuming a different direction from their previous Beat Minerz-produced projects. For The People was produced by Buckshot of Black Moon, Tony Touch, Shawn J Period, EZ Elpee, Mark "Boogie" Brown, BJ Swan, Shaleek and Louieville Sluggah. The project produced the singles "Headz Are Reddee Pt. II," "Night Riders" and "Oh Kee Doke"/"Illa Noiz."

"Watch Your Step," "Black Out" and "Go For Yours" are all bangers which are sonically more reminiscent of the Boot Camp sound than some of the other material on the album. The album's interludes are actual voicemail messages left on the Duck Down office phones. The messages are congratulatory, often praising the collective for keeping their style rugged in the wake of the more commercial "shiny suit" material that dominated at the time.

For The People peaked at #15 on the US Billboard 200 and #4 on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop albums Chart.

Catch the Boot Camp Clik live at the Rock The Bells Festival at the Forest Hills Stadium in Queens on August 5. Check out the album above.
