On Friday (2/24), Roxanne Shanté lit the Empire State Building in honor of Black History Month and the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop.

Grandmaster Flash, Slick Rick, Fab Five Freddy, Grand Puba, Rakim, Ralph McDaniels, Special Ed and Buddha Stretch were all honorees at the ceremony. In an IG post, Shanté thanked the Fashion For All Foundation, which sponsored the ceremony.

"It was truly an honor, please believe it," The Queensbridge MC and ROCK THE BELLS radio personality posted. "Thank you, Fashion Forward for always looking ahead but also looking back so you never forget anyone. Empire State Building dreams come true."

In a later post, she noted her participation in the historic lighting. "You see how how the Empire State Building is Red, Black & Green? Well guess who lit that the R-o-x-a-n-n-e."

I was totally honored and I send out nothin' but love to my Hip-Hop brothers and sisters.

Hip-Hop has been represented at the Empire State Building a few times recently. LL COOL J lit the historic landmark cyan blue last year for the Rock The Bells Festival. "Honored to have the ⁦Empire State Building turned cyan blue as New York celebrates the Rock The Bells Festival coming to my hometown," he said.

Additionally, in May 2022, the Empire State building was lit red and white in honor of The Notorious B.I.G.'s birthday, with a crown that simply said '50.'
