Music historian, drummer, and music aficionado, Ahmir "Questlove" Thompson, won Best Original Documentary for Summer Of Soul (Or, When The Revolution Could Not Be Televised) at the 2022 Academy awards.

The documentary — which chronicles the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival — won over other nominees Attica, Flee, and Writing With Fire. 

Questlove said upon accepting his award: “This is such a stunning moment for me right now, but its not about me.” He continued: “It’s about marginalized people in Harlem that needed to heal from pain. Just know that in 2022 this is not just a 1969 story about marginalized people in Harlem.”

Questlove later posted to social media: “It hasn’t hit me yet. I been living in THE most surreal circumstances of the past 24 hours. I haven’t seen a highlight reel/clip  as of yet. I appreciate the well wishes & kudos, I promise to look at them when I get settled (whenever that will happen muhahahahahaha) ——-I love you all." 

When it premiered in February 2021 at the Sundance Film Festival, Summer Of Soul won the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award. The film more recently won Best Documentary award at the 2022 Independent Spirit Awards, and it has been nominated as Best Music Film at this years Grammy’s. Quest has a Sly Stone documentary in the works, as well as James Brown documentary with producer Mic Jagger.
