HBO Max has announced the release date for New Line’s reboot of the classic 1990 hip-hop comedy film House Party, to make its premiere later this year.

House Party will be making its streaming debut on HBO Max on July 28. The film is directed by veteran music video director, Calmatic, who directs off a screenplay by Jamal Olori and Stephen Glover. Tosin Cole, Jacob Latimore, Karen Obilom, and comedian DC Young Fly star in the film. LeBron James and Maverick Carter produce through their SpringHill Company. The company’s Spencer Beighley and Jamal Henderson executive produce, along with Reginald Hudlin, Warrington Hudlin, and Gretel Twombly.

Hip-hop duo, Kid n' Play made the transition from rap stars to Hollywood stars after the success of the original 1990 film, subsequently starring in two sequels, as well as the 1992 comedy Class Act, and their own Saturday morning cartoon.

The forthcoming reboot film follows the original plot to the original House Party, chronicling a high schooler sneaking out to his friend’s house party in what turns into a wild night of antics, music, and coming-of-age shenanigans. The original film was a box office hit for New Line in 1990 and is credited with helping introduce hip-hop music and culture to mainstream audiences. The film also launched the career of writer-director Reginald Hudlin as well as the acting careers of Christopher "Kid" Reid, Christopher "Play" Martin, Tisha Martin-Campbell, Martin Lawrence, A.J. Johnson, Daryl “Chill” Mitchell, and Full Force (Paul Anthony, Bowlegged Lou, and B-Fine).

House Party’s Director, Calmatic, has made his name in the hip-hop world as a go-to music video director for some of the game’s most high-profile artists. The Los Angeles filmmaker has directed videos for Pharrell Williams, Jay-Z, Lil Nas X, Vince Staples, and more.
