As promised, Saturday's (6/1) 6th annual Sha Rock Day was indeed a celebration of women in Hip-Hop. Held at Gun Hill playground in the Bronx, and hosted by the legendary Roxanne Shante, the day was an opportunity for the community to gather and enjoy food, games, classic music, and interactions with some of Hip-Hop's most influential icons.

The day included a B-Girl exhibition, a female MC cypher, DJ sets by the legendary DJ Hollywood, DJ Flame, and DJ Breakout of The Brothers Disco. The event was highlighted with the presentation of proclamations from the City of New York to Rock The Bells Radio host Roxanne Shante, the Zulu Nation's Queen Lisa Lee, Def Jam's first Lady Nikki D, MC Sparky D, MC Debbie D, Pebblee Poo, and The Sisters Disco - the all female security force for The Brothers Disco.

The centerpiece of the awards ceremony was the presentation of a custom Justin Bua painting in the image of Shante, presented to her by MC Sha Rock. Upon receiving the piece, Shante thanked the crowd for coming out to celebrate Hip-Hop. "Give your selves a round of applause for coming out here, and for being alive, because we have lost so many," she said.

"To be able to come out, get together, have fun, celebrate, remember the time, and make memories all in the name of MC Sha Rock is incredible," she said further. Hip-Hop icons such as Chuck Chillout, Grandmaster Caz and AD of The Cold Crush Brothers, Cutman L.G., Mr. Biggs of The Soul Sonic Force, Charlie Prince of The Dynamic 3, DJ Jazzy Joyce, Special K of The Treacherous 3, Mikey D, Reggie Reg of The Crash Crew, King Sun, and many more were on hand for the festivities.

The celebration continued on Sunday with a Women's Brunch from 10AM to 1PM at The Shaking Crab, on White Plains Rd in The Bronx. City Councilman Andy King and Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson announced at last years event that Sha-Rock Day will be officially celebrated across all of New York's boroughs on the first Saturday of June each year.
