Luke Skywalker Records founder Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell announced earlier today (10/16) that he was victorious in a court case where he won the rights to the 2 Live Crew catalog from Lil Joe Records. "All of our albums, we won we got all our shit back from Lil Joe Weinberger," he said in front of the Dade County Federal Courthouse. "God is so good, you just gotta believe in him," he said.

Joseph (Lil Joe) Weinberger, a tax lawyer who served as Campbell's CFO and in house counsel bought the rights to the 2 Live Crew's master recordings out of bankruptcy for $800,000 in 1995. He formed Lil Joe Records to distribute the recordings, and has been collecting royalties since. Christopher Won and Mark Ross (Fresh Kid Ice and Brother Marquis) also made deals with Weinberger a few years later. Fresh Kid Ice died in 2017, and Marquis died earlier this year.

In 2020 Luke, Marquis and the heirs of Fresh Kid Ice attempted to regain their rights under Copyright Act 203, which grants artists the ability to terminate their copyrights after 35 years. Upon receiving the termination notice, Weinberger filed a lawsuit claiming that Campbell, Marquis, and the Won heirs had no rights to terminate. Congrats Uncle Luke!
