DJ Kool Herc's Memorabilia To Be Auctioned By Christie's

DJ Kool Herc's Hip-Hop memorabilia will be auctioned online in a sale organized by Christie's auction house in conjunction with consultancy practice Paypal Arts international. The sale runs from August 4 through August 8 and represents an effort by Christie's to reach a broader base of clients and collectors. An exhibition of more than 200 items included in the auction will be open to the public at Christie's Rockefeller Center galleries as part of Hip Hop recognition month.

Sotheby's Auction House in New York has recently hosted Hip-Hop auctions, with a crown worn by the late Notorious B.I.G. fetching $594,750.

Kool Herc is regarded as the Father of Hip-Hop, and the legendary sweet 16 birthday party that he DJed for his sister Cindy Campbell on August 11, 1973 is widely recognized as the birth of Hip-Hop culture. Additionally, the rec room at 1520 Sedgwick Avenue where the legendary party took place has become holy ground for many Hip-Hop enthusiasts. Kool Herc's influence is so monumental that in 2021 Senator Charles Schumer introduced Resolution 331; which is a resolution designating August 11, 2021, as "Hip Hop Celebration Day" and August 2021 as "Hip Hop Recognition Month."

"At our parties in the 1970's New York, it was about something bigger than ourselves," Herc said. "Hip-Hop is both an American immigrant story and a global story - it belongs to everybody and we can still feel and see it today."
