Kendrick Lamar the Pulitzer Prize winning rapper, has released the nearly six-minute short film for the gut-wrenching, emotionally raw song, "We Cry Together," from his acclaimed latest album Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers. The one-shot short film, which stars actress Taylour Paige, was previously screened six times at the Laemmle Royal Theater in West Los Angeles in early June.
The film was directed by Jake Schreier, Dave Free, Adam Newport-Berra and Lamar, and shot in one single take back in March 2020. It was previously announced the music video short film qualified for Oscar consideration in the Best Live Action Short category, which recognizes films that run 40 minutes or less.
Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers was the first Hip-Hop album in 2022 to cross one billion streams on Spotify, according to Chart Data. Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 in May and has since gone on to earn critical-acclaim for its deeply observational examinations of love, relationships, self-worth and Black trauma. The studio album won Kendrick a grammy for Best Rap Album and a nomination for Album of the Year, a category that went to Harry Styles and also featured Beyoncé and Lizzo.
