Eminem Discusses His 2007 Overdose: "It Took a Long Time for My Brain to Start Working Again"

Eminem appeared on his manager Paul Rosenberg's Paul Pod: Curtain Call 2 podcast recently where they discussed his methadone overdose and subsequent recovery.

"It took a long time for my brain to start working again," the "Lose Yourself" rapper revealed.

Rosenberg explained that Em had to be stabilized with a few different medications that took a while for him to adjust to. "You're learning how to rap again almost literally," he said. "It's the first time probably that you were creating without substances in your body in however many years, right?" he questioned.

Em remembered that Rosenberg was concerned that he may have endured some brain damage. "I thought you might have some permanent problems," he explained.

In 2010, MTV News reported that Em's descent into addiction almost robbed him of his life. "I was relearning basic motor skills," he revealed. "I couldn't control my handshakes. I'd get in the booth and try to rap and none of it was clever or witty. I wasn't saying it right."

After his overdose he dropped Relapse in 2009, taking a five-year hiatus as he dropped Encore in 2004. As far as being clean and sober he said, "When I got clean and sober, it was like I was a kid again. Everything was new. Not to sound corny, I felt like I was born again. I had to learn my writing skills. I was relearning how to rap. I didn't know if my MC skills were intact. But everything was fun and suddenly I started feeling happy. I hadn't felt happy for a long time."
