On the latest episode of DJ Premier's popular podcast So Wassup, the DJ and producer discussed the making of M.O.P.'s double vinyl release "Rugged Neva Smooth" and "Downtown Swinga."

Preemo starts out by giving props to M.O.P. for their breakout hit "How About Some Hardcore" and the track's producer D.R. Period, producer Silver D, and Hype Williams who directed the video.

"D.R. Period brought a new sound to the whole game with a lot of live instrumentation because he comes from a musical family and he is also from Brownsville," he said. "He produced the album To The Death except for 'Guns And Roses' which was produced by Silver D. Period also produced 'Ante Up' — I could stop right there and you couldn't say shit."

Premier explained that he first met M.O.P. in 1992 while working at WBLS and he was enlisted to remix "Rugged Neva Smoove."

"When we went into D&D to record it they were on Select Records, way before they went to Loud and Roc-A-Fella," he explained. "They said 'do your thing', and I got the vocals from two-inch tape and programmed the beat which was more spacey and not hardcore like D.R. Period did [the original version]."

Premier explained that there was room left on the tape and he suggested doing another song, which became the previously unreleased "Downtown Swinga," which was packaged as a double vinyl release along with "Rugged Neva Smoove."
