DJ Premier came up in New York City as one of hip-hop’s most talented producers, contributing to countless classic records during the genre’s golden era as he worked with the likes of KRS-One, Rakim, Nas, Biggie, and many more. Many artists would record their respective classics in New York’s iconic D&D studios, where Premier would craft some of his most memorable instrumentals.

 In episode 15 of DJ Premiers, “So Wassup?” Youtube series, the New York-based producer tells the backstory of the classic posse cut, “1,2 Pass It,” from the D&D All-Stars. Included on the track was Mad Lion, Doug E. Fresh, KRS-One, Fat Joe, Smif-N-Wessun, and Jeru The Damaja. 

With the studio at full capacity, there were plenty of legends in the studio crafting this timeless track. Unfortunately, one particular hip-hop icon was left out of the studio during the recording of “1,2 Pass It.” A young, up-and-coming Jay-Z could not get into the booth the evening because the studio was too full. 

“The great icon himself, Jay-Z, was outside, and he was not let in because Dave told Jay ‘its way too many people in here,’” Preemo explained. “He waited for a minute and gave it another shot, still couldn’t get in, and Jay left. And look what he’s become.” Preemo laughed.
