Remember when Digital Underground's concept album, Sex Packets, came out and folks really wondered where you could buy such a wonder? Turns out, that was all part of the plan.
Money-B recently spoke with Rock The Bells for Rock The Bells Radio's All City Day: Bay Area, which dedicates an entire day to Hip-Hop from the Bay Area, about the very interesting strategy legendary Hip-Hop collective, Digital Underground employed during the promotion of their 1990 landmark album.
"When Digital Underground was trying to promote our album Sex Packets, what we did to make people believe that there were actual sex packets is we would go to all of the sex clubs and peep shows and we'd pass out these pamphlets promoting 'sex packets,'" Money B remembers. "And one of the places that we started or the very first place that we went to was a strip club called The Palladium in San Francisco — it was on Broadway."
But hold up — Money B clarifies that it's not that Palladium.
"And I know it's not the Palladium that you guys are thinking about in LA where everybody performed such as ourselves and Tupac Shakur," he said. "But the Palladium is still special, but just not the way you think it is."
Of course, Sex Packets is now considered to be among the best Hip-Hop albums of all time, expansive in its approach, both lyrically and sonically. P-Funk-drenched Hip-Hop at its best, the album produced staples like "The Humpty Dance" and "Dowutyalike" and gems like "The Way We Swing." Listen to "Sex Packets" below.
