Da Brat On Rappers Supporting LGBTQ Issues: "It Definitely Helps"

Da Brat has become one of the most high-profile LGBTQ stars in Hip-Hop, and the Chicago-born rapper was recently asked to share her thoughts on Ray J's words of support for the LGBTQ community. Ray J uploaded a video urging more straight men to offer support for LGBTQ issues and LGBTQ people, and Brat echoed his sentiments.

“I think when Ray J is passionate about something he speaks on it and I’m not mad at him," said Brat. "I kinda appreciate him for speaking out and saying how he feels. Shout out everybody, you shouldn’t discriminate. If somebody you know and love is gay and they're doing something great, shout 'em out and give ’em their flowers, too."

Brat added that she believes that certain high profile names would have more influence if they spoke about the issue.

“Maybe if Snoop said it," Brat said. "Snoop has more people of different genres and people all over the world know Snoop, but it may affect some change in people that respect Ray J. But, you know, I think a lot of the OG’s out here would respect somebody else saying it, too, but I think it definitely helps."

In a nearly 12-minute video shared to Instagram, Ray J said he wanted to sponsor “the whole Gay Pride Month and do Ray Pride.” He urged more widespread support and talked about Pride Month events.

“A lot of niggas that’s straight, they don’t be trying to shout-out to the gay community and all my gay niggas the right way so I gotta do it because I wanna make sure niggas know that I’m showing nothing but love,” he said. “We fuck with y’all. We have multiple businesses together. I’ve got a lot of brands. … I just wanna say that it’s Gay Pride Month, shout-out to all my gay niggas, shout-out to everybody in the LGBT community. I told my niggas that it needs to be more straight niggas giving love to the gay niggas. … It’s serious though. I got a lot of gay friends and I got lot of real niggas that’s gay and we make a lot of money together.”
