Common's EGOT status is now loading ... the legendary Chicago rapper is set to make his Broadway debut in the Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Between Riverside and Crazy, The Wrap reports. Common will play Junior, the recently paroled son of an ex-cop, in the play by Stephen Adly Guirgis and directed by Austin Pendleton.
“City Hall is demanding more than his signature, the landlord wants him out, the liquor store is closed – and the Church won’t leave him alone," the synopsis reads per a press release. "For ex-cop and recent widower Walter “Pops” Washington (Henderson) and his recently paroled son Junior (Common), the struggle to hold on to one of the last great rent stabilized apartments on Riverside Drive collides with old wounds, sketchy new houseguests and a final ultimatum.”
The role will put Common closer to achieving EGOT status, which would be a first for any rapper. Already, he has an Emmy, Oscar, and Grammy, and with this run could potentially be up for a Tony Award.
“I’m truly still working to get to where I want to be,” Common, who's appeared in over 40 films, told Indiewire back in 2018. “I want to be one of the great actors of our time. I don’t want to just play the ‘black character,’ or one-note human beings.”
Between Riverside and Crazy will debut in November.
