Founded by Cory Robbins and Steve Plotnicki in 1981, Profile Records was one of rap music's premiere record labels and was responsible for many firsts.

1984's Rap 1 and 85's Rap 2 compilations were greatest hits albums featuring some of the best releases from artists who were signed to the label including 1984's "Here Comes That Beat" credited to Pumpkin & The Profile All-Stars. In 1987 Profile rounded up Run-D.M.C., Sweet T, Spyder D, The Showboys, The Disco 4, Dana Dane, King Sun and Derek B and released raps first holiday compilation. Kurtis Blow's "Christmas Rappin'" was seven years old and already considered a Christmas classic while The Treacherous Three's "Santa's Rap" from the 1984 motion picture Beat Street was still in rotation every December. Profile was the first label to step up to the plate and release a full Christmas album, complete with album cover art that contained ornaments and a gift wrapped B Boy in shelltoe Adidas.

Run-DMC was Profile's most popular and profitable act, and their wildly popular "Christmas In Hollis" was included on Christmas Rap as well as A Very Special Christmas which included songs by Whitney Houston, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and Madonna. According to Def Jam Records head of PR Bill Adler, he suggested that the group talk about their hometown of Hollis, Queens and sample Clarence Carter's "Back Door Santa". "Christmas In Hollis" has appeared in Die Hard, Orange Is The New Black, The Simpsons, The Office and several other places in popular culture. "Christmas In Hollis" has become one of rap music's most popular holiday songs, rivaling 1979's Christmas Rappin' by Kurtis Blow, which is rap's very first holiday song.

quotes
King Sun delivered a departure from the typical holiday cheer of Christmas music, and spoke about the realities of Christmas in the city."

Sweet T delivered the Hurby Luv Bug produced "Let The Jingle Bells Rock" which talked about kissing beneath the mistletoe, Santa and chestnuts roasting, but the track could have been utilized at any time during the year. A blend of "Kool Is Back" by Funk Inc, "Rocket In The Pocket" by Cerrone and "Indiscreet" by D.C. LaRue ; "Let The Jingle Bells Rock" is one of Hurby's better and seldom talked about productions.

King Sun took a departure from the typical holiday cheer of Christmas music and spoke about the realities of Christmas in the city. On "Christmas In The City" Sun explains that popcorn can't be used to trim the tree because "rats like salt and roaches like butter, they hang around the tree like bums in the gutter." Hurby delivers another sample heavy beat that isn't Christmas specific for Dana Dane's "Dana Dane Is Coming To Town". The "Cinderfella Dana Dane" rapper flexes his storytelling prowess with a tale of meeting the Three Wise Men and saving Christmas. Spyder D saves Christmas as well as "Ghetto Santa" with "diamonds, pearls and Fila's by the dozen, if you cant wear 'em all give some to ya' cousins." The Disco 4, Derek B, The Showboys and The Surf MC's all contributed to Profile's Christmas compilation that would open the doors for labels such as So So Def and Death Row to release Christmas albums a decade later.
