Bun B Struggled to Perform Early UGK Songs After Pimp C's Death

In a recent interview with HipHopDX, Bun B of UGK revealed that he initially struggled to perform many early UGK songs in the wake of his partner Pimp C's death.

“Initially, when he passed away, I didn’t want to do day-one songs that would resonate in that way," the Trill rapper shared. "I come from a community of people where grieving publicly was frowned upon. And so, so many people hold in so much pain. And what happens is that pain comes out at the worst time against the best people and it just puts people in a terrible place."

In the interview, Bun reflected on "The Story," a song that he wrote while Pimp C was in prison for a probation violation. "I recorded it one time and all the way through. For months, I couldn't listen to it because it was too emotional."

UGK (Underground Kings) was formed in 1987 by Bun B with the late Pimp C. Representing Port Arthur Texas, Bun B was originally in two other groups — The PA Militia and Four Black Ministers. Personnel changes ultimately left Bun and Pimp C together as UGK. Jive Records signed UGK on the strength of their Bigtyme Records debut The Southern Way. "Pocket Full Of Stones" was the first UGK song that gained nationwide attention. UGK also released four full-length LPs before Pimp C was incarcerated in 2002.

Pimp C’s incarceration led to Bun dropping guest verses on several songs, a mixtape titled Legends and his 2005 solo debut release, Trill, on Rap A-Lot-Records. Pimp C died in 2007, and B released his second solo endeavor the following year, II Trill, with guest verses from Rick Ross, Sean Kingston, Lil Wayne, David Banner and 8Ball & MJG. Bun also released Trill OG, Trill OG: The Epilogue and Return of The Trill.

Bun B recently held down a Verzuz against 8Ball And MJG, and will curate the Trill Mealz Food Court at the Rock The Bells Festival on August 6.
