Bun B on Jay-Z Reciting His Lyrics on "99 Problems": "I Would Call It Mutual Respect"

In a recent in-depth interview with Talib Kweli's People's Party podcast, Bun talked about a number of things, including the respect Jay-Z has shown him and UGK over the years. Everyone recognizes their big collaboration on their timeless classic, "Big Pimpin'" but Jay has shown love for Bun's lyricism on more than one occasion, including on Jay's hit "99 Problems."

On the third verse, Jay quotes Bun's lines from "Touched" on UGK's classic Ridin' Dirty: “Now, once upon a time not too long ago/ A n-gga like myself had to strong-arm a ho/ Now, this was not a ho in the sense of having a pussy/ But a pussy having no goddamn sense, tryna push me.”

“I feel like enough people know,” Bun B said when Kweli asked him about the reference“But I don’t feel like it’s that big of a deal. I would call it mutual respect. We do this a lot in Hip Hop, right? Where we have artists who have said, ‘Fuck that was dope, the way he said that.’ And sometimes you wanna pay homage to that wordplay. How many songs, Kweli, have you listened to and been like, ‘I woulda rhymed that last part like this?' And I think that’s what happens. I think you feel like, ‘This is a dope rhyme, I don’t think enough people heard this shit. I’m finna drop this shit in here.’ Sometimes you take a dope rhyme and make it a hook, and then people gotta go back and figure it out. But nah, I don’t think a lot of people know that. I don’t think it’s a big deal that they don’t know. Or a big deal if they do.”

In another part of the interview, Bun talked about his new super well-paying wedding gigs courtesy of his 2007 smash with OutKast, "Int'l Players Anthem (I Choose You)."

"'Int'l Players Anthem' has actually opened up an entirely new revenue stream —weddings," Bun says. "I get a lot of calls like can you come? YOu get married you do the slow song and then you do the fast song. I get wives surprising husbands, husbands surprising wives. They know the song is gonna play but then I actually come out and do the song. It's been dope, I've done probably like 10 weddings. It started in COVID and people were paying like really crazy numbers."
