Big Gipp: "A Lot of People Didn’t Know Future Is Part of the Legendary Dungeon Family"

Big Gipp of Goodie MOB recently went on Instagram to remind everyone of the legendary Dungeon Family's lasting influence, connecting the dots between DF and one of music's biggest stars, Future.

"Alot of people forget or didn’t know that Future is apart of the legendary Dungeon Family. The Dungeon Family is a group collective that included rappers like Outkast, Goodie Mob, producer group Organized Noize & many more members," he captioned a post of Future circa 2003.

Of course, a lot of people were already aware Future is a cousin to Rico Wade of Organized Noize — the connection was loudly made when he was early on the scene more than a decade ago. Still, as Gipp points out, a good deal of people weren't familiar with that tidbit of information — which is important in terms of dissecting the continued influence of the legendary DF, and how widespread and lasting its influence has been throughout the decades since OutKast first emerged with southernplayalisticadillacmuzik in 1994. Gipp goes on to say that DF was like a southern version of Wu-Tang Clan, who had emerged with their classic debut less than a year prior.

"Literally like the down south version of the Wu Tang Clan," Gipp said. "He is cousins with Organized Noize producer, Rico Wade. Before he became “Future” he was going by Meat Head & just like every other member he has it tatted on him. As Meat Head continued to grind he would reinvent himself, becoming one of the biggest rappers in the world all while still keeping in touch with his roots."

In an interview with The Art of Dialogue earlier this month, Gipp talked about DF's place in Atlanta and music at large, saying they were never too concerned with trying to win over New York executives but focused on their hometown.

"We never played friend to the industry," he said. "We was only friends to our peers and our counterparts in the game. And I think that’s where you won’t see Goodie Mob and OutKast recognized in a lot of places because hey man, y’all heroes ain’t my heroes and it ain’t gon’ ever change. And I ain’t gon’ do too much ball holding and stroking to nobody. So that’s what they don’t like about my crew."
