Allen Hughes: "After Viewing 'Juice' For The First Time, Tupac Changed His Whole Persona"

In a recent interview with Complex, film director Allen Hughes shared his experience viewing Juice with Tupac for the first time. "My brother and I did his first three music videos, and we took him to see Juice for the first time on the Paramount lot in a small private screening of like five people," he said. "He's in between me and my brother, and It blew his mind to see his image up there. It kind of changed his persona. It’s like he knew what to do with his persona in Hip-Hop based on that movie. That night we went back, and we were all staying in West Hollywood at this shitty hotel, and he knocked on our door and his head was shaved for the first time."

Hughes added that he witnessed the birth of Tupac's image that night. "That was the first time we saw the Tupac image happening. It was like that night he saw his movie, he shaved his head, and then we moved on to make two more music videos, and then 'Thug Life' shortly happened six months to a year after that."

Hughes, who also directed Dear Mama, the Emmy-nominated documentary that chronicles the relationship between Tupac and his mother Afeni Shakur, shared his thoughts about the arrest of Pac's suspected killer Duane "Keffe D" Davis with Rolling Stone.

"For whatever reason, it sounds like Davis told the truth,” Hughes said. “He’s been telling the truth. The culture was listening. Hip-Hop was listening. The streets were listening. But law enforcement, unfortunately, it took a while for them. It’s one thing if the guy had his lips sealed, but he’s been telling everyone for the last fifteen years. So it’s surprising that it took them this long. If this were Bruce Springsteen or Mick Jagger, it would’ve been one hour after the thing happened. It’s just our country. It’s so backward. It’s a shame."
