A pair of Nike Air Force 1's signed by iconic MC Ice T and Graffiti artist and Hip-Hop ambassador Fab 5 Freddy are up for auction.
The kicks were a gift to Mayor Bloomberg when Ice T and Fab 5 visited City Hall in 2008 to announce that the annual Hip Hop Honors awards show would remain in New York. At the time, Ice T said, "My people said Bloomberg's cool," according to the New York Post. Bloomberg reportedly said last week after being informed of the auction, "So that's what happened to those sneakers."
Gifts to mayors actually belong to the city, and proceeds from the auctions benefit the Municipal Archives Reference and Research Fund (MARRD). The items gifted to mayors are called Gifts To The City auctions and will occur on a rolling basis, with the first starting this month. In addition to items gifted to Mayor Bloomberg, the site has auctions with gifts to Mayors Koch, Dinkins and Giuliani.
