A recent post by producer 9th Wonder has amplified the already popular discussion concerning the need for labeling different styles of rap music by sub genre. Upon the release of The Auditorium Vol.1, Common & Pete Rock's critically acclaimed colloratice album, 9th took to social media to express the need for categories.
"This Common and Pete Rock album begs the conversation I’ve been having with folks for at least 20 years now," he wrote. "Adult Contemporary Hip-Hop needs its own category." Q-Tip responded recently, saying that he disagrees with creating new categories, but if it has to happen he disagrees with Adult Contemporary, as sees it as divisive.
"Adding "ADULT CONTEMPORARY" category 2 Hip Hop programming is divisive," he posted. "It would be nice to have everything in one pot BUT.. if there is a need to do so.. call it TRADITIONAL Hip Hop as “ADULT”will make AGEIST prejudge."
