André 3000 Reveals That Q-Tip and ATCQ Influenced His Love of Jazz Music

In a recent interview with Highsnobiety, André 3000 revealed the influence that Q-Tip and A Tribe Called Quest had on his love of jazz music. "My first rap name was Jahz because of Q-Tip," he recalled. "We were huge A Tribe Called Quest fans. In high school they were the pinnacle along with Grand Puba and Souls of Mischief."

3 Stacks went on to explain how ATCQ made jazz cool for a generation by incorporating jazz samples in their music. "I don’t think Q-Tip gets enough credit for introducing a generation of kids to a forgotten music” he said.

“As a kid, jazz music meant some old-people shit that’s in elevators. Q-Tip found a way to make it actually cool. The jazz guys were actually the rap guys of that time. They were doing heroin, they were in clubs. Years from now, people are going to listen to trap music and think, ‘Oh, that’s nice.’ It happens. It happens.”

Andre released an instrumental flute album last year that caused debate online amongst fans. Of the album he said: "You have to be happy to share something; you have to feel confident enough to share. You have to get it to a point where you don’t care what nobody else thinks. It’s almost like a relationship; no one can really judge your relationship. I hope people will think, ‘Oh, I can just try things.’ I mean, why not?”
