Too $hort: "Shock G Pimped His Way Out Here to Oakland"

The late Shock G was a prolific musician, group leader and MC. His Bay Area friend and fellow legend, Too $hort, recently spoke with Rock The Bells in an exclusive interview for Rock The Bells Radio's All City Day: Bay Areawhich dedicates an entire day to Hip-Hop from the Bay Area, about his first encounter with the man also known as Humpty.

"Digital Underground and Too $hort, we go way back," said Short Dog. "I know Shock G from before Digital Underground. He came from the east coast and he was definitely a piano player, definitely knew how to play them keys and he was working at a music store. I think it was Music Unlimited in San Leandro."

After purchasing some equipment from him, Too $hort says that Shock revealed his story and shared his future goals. "He broke it down to me like, 'I came out here, and I pimped my way out here,'" $hort remembers.

$hort continued, "He had to pimp from city to city just to afford to get from where he was to Oakland. The pimpin' brought him there. He knew it was pimpin, he knew it was music, and he got there. He told me that day that he made music and that I would hear from him. Sure enough, we heard a lot from him, and if you notice over the years I was always tight with Shock, Money-B and 2Pac. I miss that man, R.I.P."
