Someone Crazy Bought Suge Knight's Life Rights

Film producer Steve Whitney and his company TSW Films have purchased the rights to Suge Knight’s life story with plans to develop a biopic about the infamous music mogul and founder of the notorious Death Row Records. Nick Cassavetes and Anthony Thorne are to write the film’s script.

The former music executive, born Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr., co-founded Death Row Records in 1991 and is credited with bringing West Coast gangsta rap to the mainstream, as he signed artists like Snoop Dogg, Tupac Shakur, and Dr. Dre. Death Row Records has signed over 50 artists over the years and profits over $100 million a year but fell into bankruptcy after the departure of Snoop and Dr. Dre and the incarceration of Knight in 2018 as he was charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Knight is currently incarcerated at San Diego’s RJ Donovan Correctional Facility after crashing his car into Heavyweight Records co-founder Terry Carter and filmmaker Cle Sloan in 2015—killing the former and severely injuring the latter. While he pleaded no contest to the charges against him, he will not be eligible for parole until July 2037.

Suge Knight has been portrayed in multiple films including, Notorious, Straight Outta Compton, All Eyez on Me, Too Legit: The MC Hammer Story, and Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel’le.

“During the golden era of rap and hip hop, all roads led through Suge Knight,” said Whitney. “That era helped define a new brand of music and culture that changed the world.”

Cassavetes is represented by WME, LBI Entertainment, and Yorn, Levine, Barnes. Thorne is repped by CAA and Ramo Law.
