On January 10, 1986, Salt-N-Pepa performed one of their first shows together. The group went by "Super Nature" at the time and were dubbed as the "Salt N Pepper MCs."

The group's manager and producer Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor told ROCK THE BELLS the origins of both Super Nature and Salt N Pepper.

“I liked a song by Cerrone called 'Super Nature,' and what it was talking about was something more than regular nature: it was 'Super Nature,' so I felt that we were gonna be big and beyond regular. So I gave them that name originally."

Hurby explained that the name Salt N Pepper originated with Whipper Whip and the late Dot A Rock of The Fantastic 5 MCs. "A cat named Prince from the Super Lovers was from the Bronx and he knew Whipper Whip and he went to their shows. When he did his mic check he would always say “my mic sounds nice." I asked where he got that from and he told me about the Fantastic 5 and how Whipper Whip and Dota Rock called themselves The Salt and Pepper MCs. That always stuck in my head.”

Salt N Pepa's version of “My Mic Sounds Nice” was a tribute to first generation Hip Hop, according to Hurby. “When you hear the intro with “rock, rock y’all/to the beat y’all/and you don’t stop” — that’s homage to Mele Mel.

The flyer for the Brooklyn show says that the group will perform "The Show Stoppa" and "It's Alright." "The Show Stoppa" was their answer to Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick's 1985 mega-hit "The Show." "It's Alright" was co-produced by the late Jam Master Jay of Run-DMC and appeared on their debut album Hot, Cool & Vicious.

"This was one of their very first shows. Their record [The Show Stoppa] came out in 1985, and this show was right at the beginning of the year," the group's then road manager JP Edmunds told ROCK THE BELLS. According to the flyer, a group called The Suede MCs were special guests. This show was so early in their career that there was no Spiderella djing for them yet, their cuts and scratches were being done by DJ Quick Silver.

Salt-N-Pepa and Spinderella received their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame last year, with Yo-Yo, Roxanne Shante, and MC Lyte in attendance helping them celebrate the historic day. The group also received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2021.
