Rev Run: "My Favorite Place to Record Was DMC's Basement"

Power Play, Chung King and The Hit Factory are all iconic New York recording studios associated with Hip-Hop, but in a recent interview with Rock The Bells, Rev Run of Run-DMC revealed that DMC's basement was his favorite place to record.

"It wasn't quite a recording studio, but it's where I learned how to DJ," the "My Adidas" MC said. "DMC's basement had two turntables and a mixer and that's where I got my whole swagger to make records like "Mary, Mary," "It's Tricky," and "Peter Piper" — droppin' the bells from "Mardis Gras."

Run, who was a DJ as well, rose to fame in 1983 as part of the duo Run-DMC, but he started as Kurtis Blow's DJ, and was billed as "The Son of Kurtis Blow."

Originally Run was a solo artist called Run The MC, I was just fortunate that my initials were DMC.

In a previous IG live session with Rock The Bells, DMC revealed that the group never wanted to be called Run-DMC.

"We wanted to be the Dynamic 2" or something like that because that was what was popular," he said. "Groups still had numbers in their names like the Treacherous 3 and the Fearless 4. But going further back than that I was never supposed to be in the group. Russell [Simmons] didn't want me in the studio or anywhere around. Russell only allowed me on 'It's Like That' because I wrote it with Run. 'Sucker MC's' was supposed to be Run's solo song. That's why my rhyme is so short on it."

DMC also revealed that Run was originally supposed to be a solo artist. "Run was a solo artist called Run The MC. I was fortunate that my initials were D.M.C, so my name was able to be inserted when Russell named us."
