It's official — Missy Elliott will be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The talented multi-hyphenate made history in February when she became the first female rapper ever to achieve to receive a nomination. This is also the first year Missy has been eligible for nomination —her landmark debut album, Supa Dupa Fly, dropped in 1997, which means she means she meets the 25-year criteria.
Joining Missy in the 2023 induction class are Kate Bush, George Michael, Rage Against the Machine, Willie Nelson, Sheryl Crow, and the Spinners. A Tribe Called Quest, who was nominated again this year, didn't make the cut. Cyndi Lauper, Iron Maiden, Joy Division/New Order, Soundgarden, Warren Zevon, and the White Stripes were also nominated but will not be inducted this year.
DJ Kool Herc will be honored with the Musical Influence Award, as will guitarist Link Wray. Chaka Khan, Al Kooper, and Elton John’s songwriter Bernie Taupin will all receiving the Musical Excellence Award. Soul Train creator, the late Don Cornelius will be honored with the Ahmet Ertegun Award.
"This year’s incredible group of inductees reflects the diverse artists and sounds that define rock’n’roll," chairman of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, John Sykes, said in a press statement. "We are honored that this November’s induction ceremony in New York will coincide with two milestones in music culture; the 90th birthday of Willie Nelson and the 50th Anniversary of the birth of hip-hop."
Missy joins a growing number of Hip-Hop artists who've been inducted into the Rock Hall, including Eminem, who was inducted into last year's class. Grandmaster Flash and the Furious 5, 2Pac, Run DMC, N.W.A., Jay-Z, LL COOL J, The Notorious B.I.G, Public Enemy, and Beastie Boys have also been inducted.
LL COOL J announced this year's inductions in a video. Check it out below.
