The annual event became a fixture in 1990s Atlanta culture; and eventually for Black youth nationwide, flocking to the ATL for a weekend in the spring became something of a right of passage. City officials called for the closure of Freaknik in the late 1990s, citing lewd behavior and violence. The original festival ended its run in 1999. There have been numerous revivals, homages and pop culture references to Freaknik in the decades since.
