DJ Premier Tells The Story Of Classic Nas Single "Represent"

DJ Premier Says He Was Inspired By DJ Screw While Making Devin The Dude's "Doobie Ashtray"

On the latest episode of DJ Premier’s Youtube series, “So Wassup?” the legendary producer tells the story of the recording of Devin The Dude’s “Doobie Ashtray” from the Rap-A-Lot emcee’s second studio album Just Tryin’ Ta Live.

Both hailing from Houston, Texas, Preemo and Devin The Dude have had a relationship since the emcee’s days in the group, Da Odd Squad. When Devin The Dude called Preemo about remixing “Doobie Ashtray” due to sample issues, the Houston producer jumped on the opportunity.

Preemo dug into his Texas roots for this record. When he first heard Devin’s vocals, he was inspired to mimic DJ Screws’ slow-tempo style of production for the weed-smoking anthem.

“If you know a lot about Texas and the chopped and screwed era, shout out to DJ Screw, RIP, a lot of things are slow tempo because everybody drives out there. And you gotta have the right ride and this is so appropriate,” Preemo explained.

Devin The Dude requested Preemo add his classic scratching to the production. DJ Premier would go on to sample The Jungles Brother’s “Don’t Front” for the song’s intro.
