A-Trak on New Album With Cam'ron: "I Just Always Believed In This Project."

After more than a decade of development, the collaborative project between DJ A-Trak and Cam'ron, U Wasn't There, is finally available to the public. Cam’s first full-length since 2019’s, Purple Haze 2, the new project has the feeling of a classic Dipset tape.

A-Trak recently took to Reddit for an AMA to dig into the process of recording the album, saying, "Towards the end I kinda had to bring the project to the finish line myself. I just always believed in this project, believed we had something special and worth sharing with the world."

On the production:

"There's such a strong lineage of production for Cam & Dipset! Big shout out to Heatmakerz and Just Blaze of course, but also Digga on the earlier stuff. I wouldn't say that I felt PRESSURE, I would just say that I took it seriously and was excited. A lot of the most legendary Diplomats tracks weren't even mixed, it was just vocals recorded on a 2-track beat, and that roughness of the sound became part of the character. When I was working on these beats there's a dryness to the drums that was important to me."

On the sound:

"Spent a lot of time on the sound. There were a couple boxes I wanted to tick. The soul samples of course. But also the reggae beats (thinking of Dipset Anthem + Bubble Music etc). And the superhero dramatic beats. And a lot of work on getting the drums to knock right. The whole album was mixed twice. Mastered 3 times."
