Diddy Pays Sting $5K Per Day for 'I'll Be Missing You' Sample

Fans remember Diddy's 1997 tribute song to Biggie, “I’ll Be Missing You,” a collaboration with Faith Evans and featuring 112 which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed atop the chart for 11 weeks. But the success of the song costs Diddy — to the tune of $5K every day.

The track samples The Police’s classic hit “Every Breath You Take," and since Diddy didn't clear the sample before releasing the song, it means a big payday for the song's writer Sting. The fact was revisited due to a resurfaced clip of Sting’s March 2018 interview on The Breakfast Club where the iconic singer/songwriter confirmed he gets a daily check from Diddy for the song.

“Is it true that Diddy had to pay you two grand a day because he didn’t have permission to sample ‘Every Breath You Take’?” Charlamagne Tha God asks in the clip. Sting quickly replies yes, "for the rest of his life" even though he did say that Diddy eventually got clearance for the sample. While the clip claims the number is $2K a day, Diddy corrected the tweet, saying it's actually $5K per day.

In other Diddy news, we're about to see a lot more of him due to his new reality series on Hulu, which will reportedly feature his family. Diddy, who has seven children, has already been spotted filming the show in locations such as Los Angeles and Miami, according to sources, Page Six reports. He also filed to have “Diddy + 7” trademarked, according to JasmineBrand.

He's also set to hit the stage at The Roots Picnic this June.
