Cam'ron on "Welcome to New York City": "Jay -Z Didn't Kill Me On That, Absolutely Not"

Cam'ron was a guest recently on the Million Dollaz Worth Of Game podcast where he discussed "Welcome To New York City," his hit featuring Juelz Santana and Jay-Z from his 2002 album Come Home With Me.

"That was a moment, man," Cam'ron said of the recording. He flipped the question when asked whether he bested Hov on the track. "You think he did better than me?" he asked. "Did he kill me on it? No way. Absolutely not."

He then described Jay-Z's process in the studio. "What he did do, and it was amazing, he walked in the room and heard that beat for five minutes and it wasn't no premeditated shit," he said.

Cam also discussed Jay's much-talked-about process of not writing down his lyrics. "I didn't even know that we were doing a record," he remembered. "We vibed for fifteen or twenty minutes, I said let's do this record, and he did that shit in five or ten minutes with one take. It was amazing to see. As far as him takin' off on me, go listen to the lyrics. Nobody ever took off on me."

Cam'ron explained later in the interview that he and Jay-Z experienced some tension early in their relationship, and that the two didn't really speak when Cam joined Roc-A-Fella.

"I believe that you have to earn Hov's respect musically," he explained. "I've known Dame [Dash] since I was fourteen. His Grandmother lived in my projects. And I also knew Hov before he made records. I think Jay-Z felt like I was Dame's man, and not his, so I had to prove myself. As I got hotter, I would approach Jay about doing a record together and he'd always say, 'We'll see.'"

Cam explained further that the tension between the two was so evident that they finally had a conversation where the two agreed that they were good. "I said, 'Since we good, I got a beat up now. Just Blaze just did it. Let's go do it right now.' And that's how the song ["Welcome To New York City"] came about."
