Busta Rhymes was a recent guest on former NBA stars Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson's All The Smoke podcast where he revealed the inspiration for his rapid fire delivery. "My style and energy comes from Hip-Hop. Hip-Hop is the first art that fell in love with," he explained. "A lot of what I ended up incorporating into Hip-Hop as an MC was Dancehall culture and my Jamaican upbringing."

Busta explained that part of that upbringing was having to do household chores in order to earn outside time. "The way that I would pass the time while doing my chores was listening to the music that my mom and pops played in the crib," he recalled.

"The only American shit you'd find in the crib was Kenny Rogers, Michael Jackson, and maybe some jazz shit. Other than that everything was Bob Marley, Dennis Brown, Big Youth, Michigan & Smiley. These were legendary Jamaican and Reggae artists."

According to Busta it was watching the sound clashes between legendary Reggae artists that inspired his later fast rap style. "You would see Shabba Ranks and Super Cat, and they had a dude named Papa San, and another named Lieutenant Stitchie, they were the first that I ever heard do the speed rap shit," he revealed.

"This was in '86, they were at this shit called Sting. They were going so crazy with the speed rap, thats [what made me] try it. I ended up trying it in '93 on the second Leaders Of The New School album on a song called 'Daily Reminder'. That's the first time I ever did a speed rap.
