An Unofficial Guide to Bay Area Slang

The Bay Area is a world within a world with its own unique swag, sound, and most importantly its own slang words and dialect. From Oakland to San Francisco, Bay Area slang terms have spread from their epicenter in the city throughout NorCal (North California), and has now entered the mainstream vernacular for Californians and Americans across the country. Below are some of the more popular slang Bay terms, according to legends Spice 1, E-40, Del The Funky Homosapien, Sway, Too $hort, and more, who are participating in Rock The Bells Radio's All City Day: Bay Area, which dedicates an entire day to Hip-Hop from the Bay Area.

Berkeley - A city located in the East Bay known for its progressive culture and being home to the University of California, Berkeley.

Broccoli - Coined by E-40. Marijuana, sometimes it references money

Cali - California

Cattin’ Off - Doing silly things

Cream - Crack cocaine

East Bay - A region of the Bay Area that includes cities like Oakland, Berkeley, and Richmond.

Fasheezy - For sure. A term that E-40 says is derived from Fo-shizzle and already existed in the streets, but he and Too $hort said it on records first.

Fasho - A derivative if Fasheezy

Finna - A slang term used to mean "fixing to" or "going to."

For The F - To get something for free

For The Low - To get a discount on something

Gassed - Hyped up, confident or excited. Amped. Also to outdo someone is to gas them

Giggin' - Dancing

You know that somebody is from The Bay or affiliated with The Bay by how they talk. When you hear them sayin' 'Hella,' you know.

Go Toes - To fight or go toe to toe

Gone - To be high or intoxicated

Got Fired On - To get punched in or before a fight

Got Me Bent - To misunderstand someone

Guap - Money, currency, cheese

Gucci - Good

Hecka - A slang term used in the Bay Area to mean "a lot" or "very," similar to "hella."

Hella - A slang term commonly used in the Bay Area to mean "very" or "a lot." It is often used to intensify the meaning of an adjective or adverb. For example, "That dude is hella outta pocket!

Hyphy - An uptempo style of Hip-Hop music originating in the Bay. Also to be excited or amped up.

Jawsin - Exaggerating, lying or bluffing

Jug - To get something at a discount or to steal it

Mac Dre - A Bay Area rapper known for his contribution to the hyphy movement.

NorCal - A California slang term used to refer to Northern California, which includes the Bay Area and surrounding regions.

Out The Way - To be far away from where you reside

Playa Hater - One who is jealous of the success of others

Sacramento - The capital city of California, located in the Central Valley region.

San Jose - A city located in the South Bay known for its technology industry and vibrant culture.

Slaps - A slang term used to describe a song or beat that is really good. For example, "This song slaps!"

Slappin’ - Hittin' hard, bangin'

Smell Me - Understand me, feel me. Posed as a question

SoCal - A slang term used to refer to Southern California and it’s prominent areas (San Diego, Los Angeles)

Stripped - To get robbed

The V - Vallejo, California

The Town - A nickname for the city of Oakland, commonly used by locals.

The Yay - The Bay. Named by E-40

Thizz - Being on the drug ecstasy

To The Neck - To keep something for yourself

Tryna - A slang term used to mean "trying to."

Tryna Hop On - To show romantic interest in someone

Tucked Off - Away from everyone. Incognito

Tweakin’ - Acting crazy

Yadadamean - A slang term commonly used in the Bay Area to mean "you know what I mean." It is often used to check in with someone and make sure they understand what you are saying.

Yee - A slang term used to express excitement or enthusiasm.
