Kendrick Lamar Returns With "The Heart Pt. 5" Music Video

By Kiani Shabazz

Kendrick Lamar has returned with the music video “The Heart Pt 5” ahead of the release of his long-awaited fifth studio album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, set to arrive this Friday, May 13.

The Compton wordsmith returns with the one-off single paired with a chilling music video directed by himself and Dave Free which features Lamar rapping as deep-fake versions of O.J. Simpson, Kanye West, Jussie Smollett, Kobe Bryant, Will Smith, and Nipsey Hussle.

The song samples Marvin Gaye’s 1976 classic “I Want You,” which Lamar interpolates on the song’s hook. The track gives more insight into Lamar’s latest alter ego, oklama, starting the track with the caption, “I am. All of us,” before he raps from the perspective of many controversial Black public figures in popular culture. As a continuation of his beloved “The Heart” series, the song is likely a preview of the prominent themes in Lamar’s upcoming album.

Kendrick Lamar has been teasing Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers through his new website, oklama.com. Most recently, the emcee made a post titled "Master," where he shared a photo of two discs titled “Morale” and “Steppers” leading to fan speculation of a double album. After a five-year hiatus since his Pulitzer prize-winning album, DAMN, Hip-Hop fans are elated about the return of Compton’s favorite emcee.
