DJ Premier Says K-Ci and JoJo Were Channeling Bobby Womack on Gang Starr's "Royalty"

By Kiani Shabazz

On DJ Premier’s 20th episode of his hit Youtube series “So Wassup?” the production legend dives back into the catalog of Gang Starr. This time, Preemo gives the backstory to their 1998 single “Royalty”  from their first certified Gold album, Moment of Truth

Gang Starr recruited K-Ci and JoJo for the record, which was a bucket list feature for the New York-based hip-hop duo.

“We always do at least one record we do for radio. This one happened to be one that we really really had on our wish list, which was to work with K-Ci and JoJo from Jodeci,” Preemo explained.

Preemo explained that K-Ci wanted to channel his inner Bobby Womack on the record, giving the record that genuine soul feel.

“I remember I got on the phone with K-Ci and JoJo at the same time, and Ki-Ci said, ‘Hey man, right now we working on the hook, and I’m about to do my Bobby Womack thing, and you know I’m gonna spray it,” Preemo recalled. “I already knew, because, shoutout to Bobby Womack, one of the most incredible Soul singers of our time that we grew up on.”
